Dumbest euphemism yet for “fired”

Just when I thought I’d seen all the mealy-mouthed expressions that corporate types resort to when they just can’t bear to say “fired” (see my December 27 post for a roundup of irksome examples), along comes the hands-down winner of the euphemism contest. Would you believe “upgrade”? According to The Irish Times, a hapless woman was told the following by her U.S. employer: “We are going to upgrade you with immediate effect. We are going to allow you to move on in order that you can use your talents and skills more effectively and thus upgrade your career and opportunities.” Hmmm. I remember when “upgrade” meant a seat in business class, but when did you last snag one of those with an economy ticket? Can it be that the only upgrade going these days is a pink slip?
