Brand building through storytelling

My Daughter – Rhonda Pond

Rhonda PMy daughter was born when I was 18 years old, a mere child myself. Through patience (my time will come…) and the loving support of my husband, we conquered the challenges of being parents and trying to grow up at the same time. Today, 35 years later, Rhonda and I are best friends, live in the same small town (Carleton Place, ON) team-mates at fastball – she catches, I pitch – and most exciting of all – co-owners of a patent for our first invention, The FAB Light, invented around the cooler after a hard-fought ball game. Our ball team is called The FAB U Lasses, and has been the highlight of our summer together for the last 22 years.

I am now 53 and Rhonda is 35 (numerology specialists could have a field day with this one) so the age gap is getting smaller and smaller. We share the same friends – between fastball, curling, and the business network – and enjoy hanging out as best buds. Rhonda now has a daughter of her own, so the magic continues into the next generation.

If I could have peeked into the future 35 years ago, and glimpsed what our lives would be like today, I could have fretted less about what would happen to us. To the young moms out there, who may be worried about how it will turn out, have faith that your youth and the youth of your child will always keep you connected. Sooner than you know, your child will be grown up, and you will still be young enough to do the things you have always wanted to do.

The motivation to succeed as an entrepreneur lies squarely with the accountability I feel to my daughter. My business needs to be successful – not for me – but for her. For Rhonda, the love of my life. And because it make a really great story!
