Brand building through storytelling

Where I tucked that post about Holden Caulfield

The day J.D. Salinger died, I posted links on Facebook and Twitter to an old post, a favourite of mine, about rereading The Catcher in the Rye after more than 40 years. Tonight I learned that some of you have looked in vain for this post, or any sign of its existence, on my home page and come away thinking it must have vanished. “I assume there’s a story behind this,” says one of my most loyal readers. In fact, I simply forgot one of the most important lessons of my long career in magazines: you can’t assume your audience knows what’s in your head. I used to tell young editors to keep things simple, and I’ve just made things quite a bit more complicated than they should be. My apologies to anyone who’s feeling frustrated. Click here for “Holden Caulfield revisited.” I’d love to know what you think.
